I was, having trouble, helping someone connect to my ftp server. It connected and then dropped them right away. After much stress and hassle of being technical support, I finally figured out it was with a passive mode setting problem. Filezilla is a free ftp software, which we both transferred to, after smart ftp messed up everything in a latest update.
This filezilla tutorial, will teach you how to setup active mode, in filezilla ftp. The first option may not be required. I am now thinking you may only need to do this via a per ftp account basis.
If you have your filezilla ftp software open click on edit, then settings. A smaller panel will open and you should see this below. Now click on passive mode. After you are there, you will see the option “fall back to active mode”. Check this and click ok.
This is your most important step. Click on file then site manager. Your ftp account manager will open. Click on an account and then the transfer settings tab. Now choose active and click ok or connect.
There you have it, your “filezilla ftp active mode setting tutorial”. You should be ok now, connecting to your server. One of my pet peeves, as a Geek and one who can be somewhat stupid at times, is; people need to give detailed answers, and visual is always a plus. It is, as you well know, frustrating to hunt all over for similar situations, only to find vague answers, such as change your active mode settings, or something else all together.
